CRIME and antisocial behaviour issues have been identified in Newquay town centre after agencies took part in a walk around the town.

Representatives from the police and fire along with a Cornwall Council community safety officer, ASB caseworker, civil enforcement, environmental protection, a community link officer and councillors conducted an environmental visual audit.

The visual inspection looks to identify any issues which may affect the perception of that area such as littering, graffiti, dog fouling, street drinking and waste management.

The multi-agency approach identified a number of issues that needs to be resolved including crime hotspots, littering and a blocked alleyway.

They will also be carrying out an environmental visual audit around residential areas in Newquay to see what issues can be addressed.

Newquay Sector Inspector Guy Blackford said: “Partners came together to conduct an environmental visual audit in the town centre.

“On this occasion we had the BID manager instead of housing providers as we were conducting a commercial audit instead of residential. A report will now be written up and areas identified for action allocated to the responsible person.”

The environmental visual audit was discussed at Newquay Town Council’s meeting on Wednesday, June 5.

Mayor Drew Creek said: “A number of issues were identified including blocked alleyways, graffiti and crime hotspots and they are actively dealing with those.

“The police are working with Newquay BID particularly to deal with the graffiti on some of the commercial buildings in Newquay. Some of of it is a little bit more offensive than others so we are keen to see the back of that.”

Cllr Steve Slade added: “I have had a lot of residents ask if they can pay attention to Penhallow Green, the piece of grass on Island Crescent, which has got the commemoration for the Penhallow Hotel fire.

“It is a particularly tricky spot for antisocial behaviour that seems to be getting worse and worse. They would like to see the more control of the area. If that could be on the list would be great.”

Mayor Creek said: “There are plans to do a more residential walk around so we can flag that to them to pick up. They are also doing some hotspot policing to pick up on antisocial behaviour in particular areas around Newquay.”
