Now a call has been made urging people across Cornwall to come forward and work in the care sector, supporting people to live independently in their homes.
Cllr Andy Virr, Cornwall Council cabinet member for adult social care and health, said: “Winter is an especially difficult time for our care and health system, with high demands for health and care support needed as certain viruses like covid-19 and flu are more easily circulated.
“Our care sector has been struggling for some time to recruit people into these vital roles but we are encouraging as many people as possible to visit our Proud to Care Cornwall website and apply for the many jobs available.
“Although 250 people won’t fill all of the care vacancies we currently have it will have a significant, positive impact on workforce capacity.”
In a recently produced video, a range of Cornwall’s care workers talk about why they think others should join the care sector.
They say: “If you want a job that is fulfilling and rewarding, just, the best thing ever, then go into care.
“Some people are just made for this industry and if you are even leaning towards it then I would say that you have that in you.”
Cllr Virr said: “The message is clear: if you are out of work, thinking about a career change and just think care might be an option for you then please get in touch.
“We hear time and time again how people might have their doubts to start with but once they are in their role they never want to do anything else.”
