A young team of Cornish wrestlers flew the St Piran flag in Brittany when they took part in tournaments during the International Celtic Wrestling Week in Lorient in August, training in three styles of Celtic wrestling.
The Cornish Wrestling Association sent eight wrestlers, including six under 18s, with two unable to compete due to injury or surgery but assisting in training.
Rachel Margetts won the ladies’ under 65kg Cornish wrestling and under 55kg Scottish backhold, as well as the young ladies’ Gouren.
Daniel Lee won the men’s under 70kg Cornish wrestling, with Andrew Lee in second place.
Philip Whiting won the men’s under 70kg Novice Gouren, and came third in the men’s under 70kg and under 80kg Cornish wrestling categories, and the men’s under 70kg Scottish backhold.
Simon Margetts won the men’s over 90kg Cornish wrestling and the men’s over 70kg Novice Gouren, and came third in the men’s over 90kg Scottish backhold.
Will Musgrave came second in the men’s over 90kg Cornish wrestling.
Simon Margetts said: “It’s fantastic that Cornish wrestling has become a permanent part of this international event. The festival at Lorient attracts around 750,000 visitors and it’s a privilege to be able to showcase this important aspect of our culture to such a wide audience.”
