A talented Cornish musician is set for stardom after winning a national television talent show.
Dylan Holloway, an indie pop singer, songwriter and producer, has won an international recording contract after being judged by Jason Derulo and Becky Hill to be the winner of BBC3’s Project Icon: The UK’s Next Music Star.
He has also won a collaboration with pop superstar Derulo and a performance slot at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend.
Derulo teamed up with BBC Three to create the new type of talent show where the music industry as a whole takes centre stage. Hosted by BBC Radio 1 DJ Jordan North, Project Icon saw Derulo, his long-term manager Frank Harris, and singer-songwriter Becky Hill mentor and judge 10 unsigned artists to prove their worth as musicians.
Dylan, also known as Dylan and the Moon, has come a long way in his music career since first taking to the stage whilst attending Newquay Tretherras.
A school spokesman said: “Dylan performed in many music concerts during his time as a Newquay Tretherras student, and also gained the role of Scarecrow in our 2010 school production of The Wiz.
“Dylan has recently returned to Tretherras to talk to our Rainbow Group of LGBTQ+ students to talk about his journey as a young trans man. Congratulations, Dylan.”
Dylan, who currently resides in London, has been working in the music industry for a decade and performed in Newquay at Cornwall Pride.
Over the years he has composed music for film and television, toured the UK and Europe supporting artists including Jessie J and KT Tunstall as well as writing songs for various artists.
Dylan said: “I would describe my music style as a singer songwriter who plays guitar, writing big pop hooks with big indie sounds.
“My dream is to travel around the world, bringing people together through live music and writing for other artists too.
“My music is best for having a feel-good time dancing at a festival in the sunshine. I just want to make people feel happy.”
Derulo was inspired to create the show when he found that of all the talent shows out there, only a few have hit superstardom.
“There has been a select few, but over the last 20 years, the ratio isn’t very high in terms of having successful artists from singing shows,” he explained, adding that he thinks this is due to the focus on singing rather than working in the industry as a whole.
Derulo wants to change this with Project Icon by “testing artists on their song-writing ability, as well as their voice, and also how well they brand themselves, and how compelling they can be on social media, in interviews, and on stage.”
