Fishermen from around Cornwall feature in a new calendar for 2024.
Organised by The Fishermen’s Mission and photographed by Chris Boulton, the calendar is entitled Hwedhla - which means ‘to tell stories’ in Cornish.
It features poignant photographs of fishermen, their boats and coastal scenes.
Chris shot active and retired fishermen in their respective ports and coves, from Newlyn to Mevagissey, Cadgwith to Newquay, Padstow to Sennen. He said he was moved by the humour, bravery and hard work he witnessed.
The tales he was told by the fishermen, by turns hilarious and shocking, inspired him to record their voices for the Hwedhla website. The library of audio recordings includes fishermen recounting experiences at sea, along with the traditions and superstitions passed down through generations.
Graphic design for both the calendar and the website was provided Tash Willmore and her team at Culpepper – The Creative Company. Cornish company Boutique Retreats sponsored the printing of the calendars.
The calendar was launched at Polgoon vineyard, Penzance, and is is available in limited quantities at www.fishermensmission.org.uk/product/calendar/
