A Cornish author and illustrator who has rapidly become a well-known storyteller and author in the region, has been featured in this month's issue of 'Pick Me Up!' Magazine.
Alasdair Hoswell, 33, of Redruth, was celebrated in the 'One in a Million' segment, which highlights exceptional individuals in the community, as Alasdair's contributions to children's literature have garnered significant attention. The magazine includes an exclusive interview where he discusses his journey and achievements.
Recently, Alasdair, had the great pleasure of attending the Holyer an Gof Publishers’ Awards evening, organised by Gorsedh Kernow. It was a huge honour for him to receive a Winner’s award from Pol Hodge, the Grand Bard of Gorsedh Kernow.
Reflecting on his achievement, Alasdair said: “I am overjoyed to have received my first award as an author. Such a wonderful evening - and congratulations to all the other winners and well done to the other nominees. I am proud to say I am now an award-winning author!”
Alasdair has been actively promoting Cornwall through his captivating children's books, which celebrate the region's rich heritage and culture. His upcoming author events this year include sessions at Kresen Kernow and Geevor Tin Mine, located in Cornwall.
Reflecting on his achievement, he said: “I am honoured to receive this award for my book, 'Cornwall, The Land You Can Count On'. It really means the world to me. Thank you to everyone who has read my books, and I am looking forward to writing and creating more children's books for Cornwall.”
Speaking about his journey and aspirations, Alasdair said: “Being a Cornish author is incredibly special to me. Our beautiful Cornwall is rich with history and culture, and I want to inspire others to celebrate and cherish it through my books. Winning this award is a dream come true, and I hope it encourages other aspiring writers to pursue their passions and tell their own unique stories.”
Alasdair struggled with reading and writing in school, vividly recalling a time when the words would spin around the page due to his dyslexia. Today, he stands as a role model, proving that dyslexia couldn't stop him from becoming an award-winning children's author.
Alasdair encourages others to start writing. He said: “Don't give up if things get tricky. Keep trying and find new ways that suit your learning style. As a visual learner, I love using pictures and drawings to help me.”
Alasdair added: “I never thought I could become an author; I always feared my dyslexia would hold me back. However, I learned to turn it into a superpower and discovered new ways of reading and writing to help me achieve my dreams.”
