MOTORISTS have complained about the lack of signage along a new section of the A30 at Carland Cross.
A number of drivers have approached St Newlyn East Parish Council to highlight there are no directions to either Perranporth or Bodmin.
There have also been complaints about a lack of “clear and appropriate” road signage for St Newlyn East or the Boxheater direction despite the issue being previously highlighted more than six months ago.
This has caused confusion for motorists with some ending up at Chiverton after an unnecessary nine-mile journey.
The issue has been taken up by St Newlyn East Parish Council, St Newlyn East Residents Association, Cornwall councillor Adrian Harvey and MP Jayne Kirkham.
Construction work for the £330-million new dual carriageway between Chiverton Cross and Carland Cross roundabouts was completed in June following a four-year project.
Shaun Skinner, the secretary of the residents’ association, said: “The situation regarding the inadequate and poor road signage at Carland Cross particularly for the village of St Newlyn East is still an ongoing issue.
“The matter was taken up with National Highways, Jason Stanton, also with Cornwall Council, Head of Transport, Vicky Fraser, but unfortunately the decision by Cornwall Council not to change any of the road signage at Carland Cross is totally unacceptable and fails to address the continuing ongoing issues concerning confusion and uncertainty, and the lack of clear signage at Carland Cross particularly for St Newlyn East.
“Cornwall Council in their response indicate there is road signage for St Newlyn East off the Mitchell junction, and motorist can use the village of Mitchell so as to reach St Newlyn East.
“To indicate that motorist can start going through the village of Mitchell is rather ludicrous, as a good 99 per cent of motorist that travel to St Newlyn East use the Boxheater junction which is a much better road network as opposed to travelling through the village of Mitchell and the narrow country lanes.
“Mitchell is experiencing highway problems regarding traffic and the issue has been raised at a recent meeting of St Newlyn East Parish Council, and the residents of Mitchell do not wish to be confronted with all the A30 traffic making their way to St Newlyn East, it would simply just add to the traffic and highway problems in Mitchell village.
“The direct signage for St Newlyn East has been lost from the newly constructed A30 and motorist are still driving along the new A30 trying to find the Boxheater junction and signage for St Newlyn East, but is doesn’t exist.
“When approaching the new road layout at Carland Cross, there is no indication or instruction as to how to reach the Boxheater junction that provides directions for St Newlyn East being the nearest largest settlement to Carland Cross, and in fact a large area of Carland Cross lies in the Parish of St.Newlyn East.
“There is also ongoing confusion between the B3288 and B3285. At one point motorist are being instructed to take the B3285, and then it suddenly changes, and motorist are being instructed to take the B3288, therefore, this is the precise reason as to why motorist are still confused and uncertain as to which road to use.
“The road signage at Boxheater needs to be also placed at Carland Cross as an advance warning and indication so as to prevent any confusion and uncertainty, but sadly Cornwall Council and National Highways fail to appreciate or attempt to resolve the issues that still exist.
“The latest situation at Carland Cross is the fact that when heading westbound and reaching the new road layout at Carland, there is clear road signage for services, Truro, Redruth but there is no signage that states Bodmin, Perranporth, it has been removed, therefore, such situation just adds to the ongoing problems regarding the provision of clear and appropriate road signage.
“When talking to local folk there is still a great deal of confusion and uncertainty regarding the lack of clear road signage around the Carland Cross area.
“Unlike when travelling around the Indian Queens area where there is excellent road signage directly along the A30 for Indian Queens, Fraddon, St Dennis, Grampound Road, Ladock, but very sadly is all one is confronted with on the new road layout around Carland Cross is Perranporth, which is totally irrelevant when one is looking to travel to St Newlyn East.
“The situation concerning the road signage at Carland Cross is still on ongoing issue and St Newlyn East is not going to sit back and give up, because it still needs to be resolved.
“The issue appears to have fallen on deaf ears at Cornwall Council and National Highways.”
A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said: “The A30 is a National Highways road, not Cornwall Council so this would be a question for them.”
National Highways has been approached for comment.
