A CORNISH charity that supports people experiencing homelessness in Cornwall hosted its annual carol service in the lead-up to Christmas Day at the grounds of Cosgarne Hall, St Austell.

Harbour Housing, who provide specialised support for people at risk of or experiencing homelessness in Cornwall, welcomed the mayor of St Austell, trustees, a vicar, residents, staff and volunteers, who all joined together. The sense of community spirit shown on the evening reflected a time of hope and togetherness.

Speaking about the event, a support worker said: “The annual event is always an exciting part of our activities at Christmas, it makes my heart full to see everyone joining in, from helping with the refreshments to putting up the decorations and lights. It is important that the community joins with us and the strength of the residents is commendable to see, as they navigate their journey in transforming their lives.”

This time of year can be difficult for some of Harbour’s residents, especially when remembering loved ones who they have lost or when reflecting upon happier times within a home they once knew. The season can also trigger complexed emotions of childhood trauma or domestic violence, as displays of Christmas can be painful reminders of being able to participate in the traditional festivities that bring families together.

Vicar Jonathan Huff, spoke about the expectation in society and the pressure to feel joy and happiness during the season. Asking the community, their thoughts, many were of loneliness and the harsher realities of life.

Harbour trustee, Jan Varney, was presented with flowers from the residents in appreciation for all of the hard work that went into setting up this event and for all the acts of kindness showed throughout the year.

Across mid-Cornwall, Harbour Housing has several supported accommodation facilities and operates outreach work to support people towards independent living. Its main residence, Cosgarne Hall, comes complete with farm, while other services include Cold Weather Provision (CWP) accommodation in Nanpean.

Since the beginning of November, the charity were recently chosen as the support provider for temporary accommodation for rough sleepers at the newest CWP in Hayle. The project is funded by Cornwall Council for six months and will provide and enable people to have shelter, warm food and support during some of the most severe weather in winter.

“We cannot end homelessness, but we can make the journey away from it better,” said Malcolm Putko, group operations director at Harbour Housing.

Through Harbour’s support, residents have also been given the opportunity to take part in educational activities and workshops, through Harbour’s, Resident Academy. The Resident Academy supports residents to gain formal qualifications and provide them with practical resources and experiences.
