A dedicated member of staff from Cornwall College St Austell has been shortlisted at this year’s prestigious National Apprenticeship Awards.

Apprenticeship advisor Charlie Cook was recognised in the Apprenticeship Champion of the Year category for her exceptional level of learner support.

Her driving force is the apprentices’ mental health and wellbeing. “I’m immensely proud of myself for being able to support, guide and ultimately save a life,” she said.

“I firmly believe that our best selves can only emerge when our mental health is prioritised. As a mental health first aider, I ensure all my learners can come to me to seek the help and support they need.”

The nomination has sparked an outpouring of praise from both staff and students who have been touched by Charlie’s commitment to apprentices.

Deputy head of campus Laetitia Mayne singled out Charlie’s dedication to the support of the children, young people and health department. “Charlie has identified where apprentices may need additional pastoral support and ensures they can access this through the College,” she said.

“Charlie works well to engage with new employers and existing ones, and is keen to showcase the reason why the Cornwall College Group is the top performing apprenticeship provider in the South West.”

Apprenticeship advisor Kris Ohlsson said: “I have never worked with anyone so dedicated and emotionally invested in their role. Charlie’s inspirational effort and love shine through in every task she undertakes. She genuinely cares about her students’ success and progress.”

“This is such a great achievement for Charlie. She goes above and beyond, finding solutions for businesses and apprentices to meet their unique needs, preventing stress and anxiety amongst young people in Cornwall.

“Her gentle and approachable nature is especially appreciated by those with special educational needs,” said colleague Tamara Taylor. “She’s a worthy nominee for this prestigious award.”
