Newquay Town Council’s free Christmas tree drop-off service has been deemed a success.

The authority's environment service team has transformed the 416 Christmas trees into approximately three to four tonnes of valuable mulch thanks to the Newquay community, which will be used to enhance the public flowerbeds across the town.

The initiative provided residents with a convenient drop-off location at South Fistral Car Park.

The trees were then taken off-site to be chipped by the council's Environment Service team.

The wood chip will now undergo a six-month maturation process, ultimately serving as mulch to enhance the town’s flowerbeds.

Newquay Town Council has not only saved valuable resources by chipping and repurposing the trees as mulch but has also prevented these trees from ending up in landfill.

Cllr Andy Hannan, Chair of the Environment and Facilities Committee, said: “On behalf of my Committee and the Town Council, I would like to thank all those residents who took the time to drop off their Christmas trees, and the Environment Service team for co-ordinating the initiative.

“The smell of all those pine trees being shredded must have been amazing.”

A spokesperson for the town council added: “The success of this initiative is a testament to the shared commitment of the Newquay community towards responsible waste disposal and recycling.”
