A charity that helps vulnerable people in Newquay has been nominated for a prestigious award.

DISC Newquay have been nominated for the King's Award for Voluntary Service.

The King's Award for Voluntary Service is a highly esteemed accolade that honours organisations and individuals who have shown exceptional dedication to volunteering and community service.

Equivalent to an MBE, the King’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to local voluntary groups in the UK.

The nomination recognises the difference the DISC charity makes in the community.

Monique Collins, the chairman of DISC Newquay, said: “We are incredibly honoured to be nominated and thank you to those that nominated us.

"We don’t do what we do for medals, certificates or awards however it’s very important to me that my volunteers receive the credit they so much deserve. We just care about our local community.

“The volunteers are a very diverse group of people all coming together to give back to our community even if it’s only time on offer.

“We really have such a happy team.

“I absolutely love it at the moment as we laugh so much, and I don’t even have to feel I am the manager.

“It just flows now as everyone knows what they are doing. It’s magical really. We complete each other and that’s why it works.”

Disc Newquay provides various services including providing hot meals and clothing to people.

Monique said: “Lots of people have recently asked me why do you do what you do?

“Well, I can now give you a more straight answer than just because I care.

“I am certain I speak for all of us as a group when I say the most important thing is to know that families are fed a healthy diet and plenty of food to go around for mum and dad as well as the children. “To not to have to worry where does the next meal come from, how to stay warm and how to keep your beloved pet animal.

“Clothing, school uniform, nappies, wet wipes and baby milk. These are essential things in life.

“If homeless, we will make sure you have food and toiletries.

“If street homeless we will provide you with food, a tent, sleeping bag and a phone.

“As long as families, individuals are fed and warm that’s all that is important and that’s why I do what I do with my mighty army of volunteers.

“These are basic things that are worth more than any amount of money to me.

“I’d rather see a smiling face then receive any awards or rewards. And we have zero food waste as any vegetables left go to a friend of mine with a multitude of animals so we’re green as can be.”
