The first in-person meeting of the PSPA Devon and Cornwall support group to take place west of the Tamar was held at The Gorse Bakery, Lanteague, near Newquay, on Thursday, July 25.

The group was launched by Florence (Floss) Bate, from Newquay, with the support of the PSP Association (PSPA). In 2023, Floss’ father, Richard, was given the life-changing diagnosis of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare neurological condition that causes problems with balance, movement, vision, speech and swallowing.

“The group is all about bringing people together and giving a support network to people who need it most,” said Floss. “As we are all in a similar situation, we can share information – for example, not all insurance companies will cover people with PSP, so those who have found some can pass that on.”

Ahead of the meeting, Floss, brother Louis and friends will tackle the Three Peaks challenge – Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Snowdon – in 24 hours this Saturday. Their aim: to raise £6,000 for the PSPA in its 30th year.

Their JustGiving target was exceeded earlier this week. “Dad was very emotional when we told him,” said Floss. “One hour in the laboratory costs £50, so we are helping to fund treatment and research for a cure, as well as getting people to talk about PSP – 181 people have pledged support, and that’s 181 people who might not have heard of PSP before.”
