Black Voices Cornwall and the Old Bakery Studios will host a night of Latin and Afro-Caribbean music on Friday to celebrate Black History Month .
Penzance group Kizamba will take the audience on a musical journey around Latin America and the Caribbean. Expect high-energy Afro-Cuban salsa, smooth Brazilian sambas, cool Latin jazz, rhythmic Colombian cumbias, infectious socas and singalong reggae favourites.
Dance instructor Nic Morrisson from Salsa Conmigo in Truro will lead a pre-music line-up to get everyone familiar with dancefloor moves. Greg Dyer – aka DJ Descafeinat – will spin Afro-Latin tech on the decks in the break and into the early hours.
Caribbean cocktails will be available at the bar, so you can sip a proper Jamaican rum punch while doing your two-step to the reggae classics.
Kizamba lead singer Kat Carr was born and raised in Jamaica and has lived in Penzance for 15 years. “Enjoying the music of other cultures and dancing together is one of the best ways to open ourselves to cultural enrichment and human connection,” she says.
“The band started in COVID when people were social distancing and couldn’t even shake hands, much less dance together. We’ve since seen the salsa community rebuild and go from strength to strength.”
