Parts of Camborne are looking clean and tidy thanks to the efforts of a local initiative.
Twenty-two members of the Green and Clean of Camborne group rolled up their sleeves again to clear litter at the footpath between Beacon and Pengegon including the fields and the pedestrian bridge at Foundry Road.
The Big Clean Up also included some parts of Barripper, Penponds, Beacon, and Pengegon, many back lanes, some parks, some areas near Tesco’s and the pond on the mining trail at Tuckingmill.
The volunteers managed to collect 15 bags of litter plus a number of other small items.
The Big Clean Up initiative follows concerns raised Camborne has a litter problem.
Paul White, the chairman of Green and Clean of Camborne group, believes part of the problem is people putting their rubbish out days before the collection date, which results in litter becoming strewn across the streets by seagulls, cats, vermin and other scavenging animals.
A number of residents have already been issued with warning letters and fixed penalty notices for waste related matters.
Paul White, who is also the Cornwall councillor for Camborne Trelowarren, said: “The volunteers for the litter pick are absolutely amazing and a credit to our town. Given the size of the area we covered since last months Big Clean Up it was better than I expected as most streets were quite tidy.
“I think this is due to the efforts of individual members of the group who have adopted specific areas and keep the streets as clean and tidy as they can throughout our town.
“But the major on-going problem is still in the back lanes where some people just chuck their rubbish bags out with no thought for others leaving the seagulls to swoop down and start pecking away at them and then leave an unsightly mess and then expecting someone else to clear it up.
“I know we shouldn’t have to go around doing this but unfortunately that’s the way it is and Camborne would be far worse state than it is now.
“I will continue to try my best and do whatever is necessary to stop this from happening so please be warned.
“Big thank you to John and Clive and the Biffa team who will collect the rubbish bags we left at different locations as soon as possible.”
