Gifted Camborne students have won a prestigious competition on home turf.

A team of four Nexus students triumphed at the Cornwall Schools’ Science Olympiad held at the Nexus Centre in Camborne

Sixty-eight students, representing 14 secondary schools from across Cornwall, competed in the yearly event.

The competition was organised by the Cornwall School of Mathematics and Science, who are Cornwall’s leading provider of post 16 maths and science provision.

The teams competed against each other over three rounds.

The tasks included a practical challenge, a theory challenge and an engineering challenge. Points were earned in every round, with the top two teams going head-to-head in a ‘University Challenge’ style showdown. All competitors stayed for the exciting final and cheered on the finalists in the showdown.

The Camborne Nexus team made it into the final round, where they competed against Penair School in a tough head-to-head beat the buzzer style final.

The team excelled in the final, winning the Cornwall Schools’ Science Olympiad shield.

Dan Chapman, vice-principal who organised the event said: “The event was academically demanding and stretched the most able students in Year 10 across Cornwall, whilst also providing some fun challenges and experiences.”

The event is seen as an opportunity for students to experience part of the Cornwall School of Mathematics and Science’s ethos for learning, where the emphasis is on engaging students and helping them develop an enquiring mindset during their post-16 studies.
