BEATLES fans from Germany have visited Newquay on the 57th anniversary of footage being filmed for the Magical Mystery Tour in and around the town.
Simon Mitchell, his wife Petra Mitchell and two friends, Gabi Koepp and Juergen Meis, spent time at a number of locations that the Fab Four visited during their stay at the Atlantic Hotel in 1967 between September 12 and 15.
They followed in the footsteps of John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney by visiting the Huer’s Hut, Porth, Watergate Bay and the Tywarnhayle Inn in Perranporth, which all featured in the Magical Mystery Tour.
They were also shown the swimming pool at the Atlantic Hotel where a show was held with girls wearing bikinis as well as the annex next to the hotel where the band stayed.
Simon, Petra, Gabi and Juergen, who were dressed in costumes similar to what the Beatles wore during filming, also met up with people who witnessed the event to share stories.
Simon, who was an extra during the Magical Mystery Tour filming with his sister Angela Mitchell in West Malling, said: “We have taken hundreds of photos and talked to many people who have memories of the Magical Mystery Tour being filmed in and around Newquay. It has been a great visit.
“We met a lady at the car boot sale who was in the film with her cousin next to their two dogs. They were extras in the film as gunmen with gun dogs.”
Gabi and Juergen are the owners of the Beatles Gallery The Green Walrus at Viersen in Germany.
Gabi said: “We are in the Newquay Nostalgia Facebook group so we have been making a lot of connections that way.
“We have chatted to many people who have memories of the Beatles visit and have passed on names for us to follow up.
“We have spoken to some girls who knew the waiter at the Atlantic Hotel. He smuggled them in to get autographs and one woman who danced with John Lennon in the hotel’s ballroom. She said he was not the best dancer but that it was a great experience.
“Everyone we have met have been interested in talking about the Beatles.
“We have had so much fun and met so many people with memories of the Beatles visit. I’m very sorry to have to go home.”
Simon is the owner of a Charity Magical Mystery Tour Museum and the owner of an original Magical Mystery Tour Bus, which is to be restored in the UK, which raises money for Children with Cancer.
He is on the lookout for a sponsor to help fund the restoration.
