A charity rugby team has scored after raising £800 for children’s charities.

Bolingey Barbarians raised the money through staging a collection at the Cornish Pirates recent fixture against Nottingham at the Mennaye Field in Penzance.

Bolingey Barbarians’ chairman Roger Mead said: “Our endeavours to help children’s charities in Cornwall through our collection was successful. We raised nearly £800 thanks to the generous support of all those who kindly donated to our appeal.”

The Bolingey Barbarians wished the Cornish Pirates every success in the remainder of this season’s campaign and extended its congratulations to Cornish Pirates’ owner, Sir Richard ‘Dicky’ Evans, who was awarded a knighthood in the New Year Honours. They also expressed appreciative thanks on the matchday to the club’s media liaison officer Phil Westren.

Roger said: “Phil has championed the Bolingey Barbarians cause for years and has been instrumental in making us feel welcome, highlighting our charitable work with his informative commentary to the rugby faithful at the Mennaye.

“We are delighted to make Phil an ‘honorary Barbarian’ and hope he enjoys wearing his black and gold tie as much as we do.”

Phil said: “I am taken aback by such kind gestures. The Bolingey Barbarians form such a fine and unique group of people, real rugby stalwarts who are commended for all their great, and still ongoing, charitable efforts made.”

The Bolingey Barbarians have raised more than £150,000 since they were formed in 1993.
