The Cornwall Banger Rally Challenge held a fundraising event on Sunday morning, with ralliers and supporters taking part in a supermarket sweep at Asda to collect donations for St Austell Foodbank.

Five teams collected a whopping 839.6kg of food, to the value of £500 which was funded by this year’s charity rally to St Tropez.

Teams stayed for four hours after the sweep to raise £131.35 in cash, which equates to over a tonne of desperately needed food for the foodbank. Rentplus sponsored the first prize of £50, but both winning teams – Wizard of Oz and Buddy the Elf – donated their prize money to the foodbank in more food.

Event organiser Gareth Fitzpatrick said: “A massive thank you to Asda and all the local shoppers that gave so much. We were moved to tears at times by some people’s generosity.”

Split or Bust 2024 will be the 11th rally by the Cornwall Banger Rally Challenge Team. It will leave Charlestown Harbour on September 21 and end at Split on the Croatian coast seven days later. To find out more, join the Facebook group Split or Bust 2024 or visit www.bangerrallychallenge.org
