A popular Cornish beach is certainly not toying around with its annual fund-raiser.

Lusty Glaze Beach in Newquay is holding its fifth annual “toy amnesty” in aid of Children’s Hospice South West throughout January.

People are invited to bring in donations of un-needed children’s toys, games, books, clothes and other amenities for children up to the age of 16 in exchange for free teas and coffees.

The Lusty Glaze team will then drop the items off to Children’s Hospice South West at the end of the month to help the charity whose mission is to make the most of short and precious lives by providing free care for children with life-limiting conditions, and their families.

New toys will remain at Little Harbour at Porthpean in St Austell to be loved by children who are receiving care at the hospice, whilst pre-loved items will be sent to Children’s Hospice South West charity shops, where they will help raise the vital funds needed to support the charity’s work.

Andi Millson, the operations manager at Lusty Glaze, said: “This is one of the most important and heart-warming charity campaigns for us, and we’re so proud to be running it for the fifth year this time around.

“We were overwhelmed by the record-breaking local generosity shown to Children’s Hospice South West last year, and we’re so pleased to be supporting the incredible work that the charity does to help families going through the most difficult circumstances imaginable.

“Our amazing local community continues to dig deep and show outstanding generosity and compassion so, to say thanks to everyone donating this year, once again we’ll be inviting anyone who drops donations off to stay and enjoy a free tea or coffee at the beach.”

Last year’s record-breaking amnesty saw Lusty Glaze delivering two van loads of toys, games, clothes, books, and the items to Little Harbour.

Alice Merrett, area fundraiser at CHSW, congratulated the team at Lusty Glaze for a fantastic five years of fundraising.

She said: “We’re so appreciative for all the help the local community give to our charity. Little Harbour faces running costs of over £3m a year to cover the specialist respite, palliative, emergency, end-of-life and bereavement care we provide. We receive very little government funding, which means we rely heavily on voluntary contributions from our dedicated supporters and the local community.

“We are so grateful that even amidst a cost-of-living crisis and all the difficulties that families have faced over the past few years, they are still able to make time and find donations to support us and the families we care for.”

• To donate, take your unneeded toys, clothing items, toiletries and other amenities for children, down to Lusty Glaze Beach any day in January, and enjoy a free hot drink in return. The café will be open daily from 9.30am to 4.30pm to receive donations.
