YOUNG members of the Kate Rogers Creative Academy staged their production of Les Miserables to enthralled audiences at Liskeard School and Community College, writes Kerenza Moore.

The passion and the struggle of the poor pulsed through each moment of the show, the first to be presented by the company.

Accompanied by a band of live musicians, the cast of all under-18s were co-directed by older members of the academy, who cleverly judged movement and use of space, and choreography to underline key moments.

With a minimal set, and simple lighting, the focus of this production was on conveying genuine emotion and exploring the raw truths faced by those telling their stories.

This, together with the beauty, power and humour of the show’s songs in stunning vocal performances, held the audiences gripped. The Kate Rogers Academy will be starting rehearsals for its next production of Oliver! on Saturdays from September 9.
