A special ceremony is set to be held in Charlestown to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

St Austell Bay Parish Council has organised a beacon lighting on Charlestown Harbour on the evening to mark the occasion on Thursday, June 6 at 8.45pm.

The beacon, which will be lit at 9.09pm, will be one of hundreds which are to be lit at the same time across the UK to commemorate those who took part in the historic D-Day landings.

The Charlestown beacon will be lit by parish council chairman Cllr Bill Leach along with local resident Malcolm Neill, a former parish councillor who served in the Merchant Navy for many years.

Mr Neill will also read the International Tribute. Anna Minear from St Austell Town Band will play a fanfare, The Last Post and Reveille.

Also attending the event will be councillors from St Austell Bay Parish Council and James Mustoe, Cornwall councillor for the area, who will be reading the proclamation.

Cllr Leach said: “It is a privilege and an honour to be able to take part in this commemoration event and we would like to invite any residents in St Austell Bay to join us for this occasion.

“It is vital that we remember important moments in history such as D-Day and remember those who were involved and lost their lives. St Austell Bay Parish Council is proud to be taking part in this event.

“We would like to thank Charlestown Harbour Ltd for their help and assistance with the staging of this event.”
