A Newquay book shop is giving away free books to children to celebrate its first World Book Day on Thursday.

Clemo Books in Bank Street is inviting local children to exchange their World Book Day token for one of the books in its 2024 selection as part of the national celebration.

Owner Jaimie Poyner, said: “We’re so excited to be a part of World Book Day and help promote reading for pleasure, which is so important for children.

“For youngsters who might not get the chance to choose their own book or visit a bookshop usually I think it’s a very special event and we’re so pleased to be a part of it.

“The tokens are live now so youngsters can pop into the shop and choose their book whenever suits them and their families.”

Clemo Books is also working with local schools to offer support in giving children the chance to visit the bookshop or curating a selection of books so that schools can create their own pop-up bookshops.

The bookshop will be open as usual so that children can pick up their book after school.

World Book Day aims to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Clemo Books started business as a pop-up bookshop in Newquay before eventually opening a bricks and mortar store on Newquay’s high street in November 2023.

The independent bookshop has a book club and hosts events for adults and children regularly.
