A MAN believed to be “in distress” in the sea at Mawgan Porth was brought to shore by the police on Sunday night.

Newquay RNLI Lifeboats and Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to assist Devon and Cornwall Police with the incident at 8.30pm.

The lifeboats and coastguard were stood down when the man was brought to safety.

Police were called following concern for the welfare of a man at Mawgan Porth Beach at 8.10pm.

A police spokesperson said: “The man had entered the sea and was in distress.

“Officers attended and brought him out of the water a short time later.

“The man in his thirties was not injured.

“He was left in the care of family and appropriate safeguarding support measures were put in place by police.

“HM Coastguard was alerted but stood down after the man was brought to safety.”

A spokesperson for Newquay Coastguard added: “Shortly after initial crew had arrived on scene the team were stood down as the incident had been resolved.”
